Now that everyone can publish their opinions twenty-four seven from their mobile, it may seem as though democracy entails all opinions being equal. But the opinion of the cabinet can impossibly equal the opinion of some drunks next to a herring cart.
The judgment of a judge is not just the opinion of an individual. Democracy is also the system of institutions, in which an order between judgments is registered. Problems start when people don’t acknowledge specialists or the rulers of these institutions.
When does the judgment of a group of patients outweigh that of a doctor? And what if it’s too late? And does the opinion of a politician devaluate when he starts acting like a drunk next to a herring cart?
Spinoza was cautious about the uncontrollable illnesses of the rabble. He knew how easily discussions could stop and pogroms and lynches could start, like on the De Witt brothers.
